It's the end of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with the production studio announcing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has run continuously for more than 25 years and included dozens of filler arcs. Starting in the new year, after the current storyline wraps up, the anime will take a three-month hiatus until spring, when the next major arc begins.
New Release Strategy
From now on, One Piece will produce a pair of cours every year for a maximum of 26 episodes. The studio states this will help the anime to “explore further into the heart of the universe — including more material, tempo, and pacing of the source material.” Yet, Toei end by promising “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which suggests more related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut in the interim.
Learning from Past Breaks
The series anime previously took a six-month break that started in late 2024 and ended in April 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to enhance the animation quality and let the comic to get further ahead to prevent a faster anime pace and repetitive summaries. The anime greatly benefited from this break, and it has managed to supply fans with numerous fight scenes, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than previously.
Embracing Seasonal Format
While some recap episodes appeared during this season, the benefits of this new production schedule far surpass the odd pause in the story. This additionally allows the manga, which is currently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. According to the news, this may lead to a single installment of the series covering one chapter, with others alternatively covering one and a half chapters or more to make up for scheduling.
It's the end of an era for anime, as the epic saga is the last big series to abandon the traditional method of creation, which prioritized airing for most of the calendar. It's the reason why iconic series such as Naruto, and of course One Piece have so many side stories, and the standard of the art can change drastically between installments and the next. Nowadays, series creation is organized in cours, with a couple at most coming out each year, enabling better quality and greater accuracy to the source material.
