Federal authorities have entered the fray in a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the state's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in a US district court, challenges the redistricting plan championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's electoral map represents a brazen power grab that violates voting rights and undermines the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will withstand legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit claims that California's map improperly used racial considerations to significantly advantage Latino communities in violation of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the major counterpunch by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that began in Texas and has extended to multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the majority will influence the final years of the sitting president's term, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and possible further challenges.
